You know the rules… let’s get this story finished!

A red light slowly blinks in the distance as the moonlit sky covers the desert floor like a morning frost. I haven’t seen a soul for hours as I walk along the side of the road with an empty gasoline can. I don’t know what made me think I could get there on a quarter tank, but this will be the last time I try that as I’m headed for what I hope is somewhere. With no cell phone coverage, the moonlit sky was dotted with stars and satellites as far as the eye can see.

…“Can you hear me now? How bout now?” I said to myself quietly with a smirk as I made my way towards the blinking red light. It seems like I’ve been walking towards that light for hours but don’t seem to be getting any closer.

An eerie silence follows me as a cool wind begins to press up against my chest. With an empty gasoline can in one hand, my other hand is busy keeping my hat on my head. This shortcut is turning into a nightmare. I thought for sure there would be more signs of existence out here than this.

All alone, out of gas, and out of reach. In the middle of nowhere, but close to somewhere, I hope. That darn blinking light has got to mean something!
